Date:Friday 6/27 & Saturday 6/28 Day:1-2 of my journey
Excitement! This word means to be roused through emotional response.
Synonyms include desire, interest, eagerness. One might feel this when traveling abroad for the first time or when being sent
on a delegation with 38 students and 4 adults you hardly know. Perfect! This made it the perfect word for my day filled with
excitement.
I was
half asleep and half lost in my thoughts. My parents volunteered us to drive Chris, one of the delegation leaders to the airport.
We all lined up and received our tickets. At this point every thing seemed very familiar. In the meetings we rehearsed airport
procedure but now every thing seemed so real and I felt that at this point I forgot everything I had learned. I tried not
to show it and replaced the look of clueless ness on my face with one of cheery stupidity. We all lined up in alphabetical
order and received our boarding passes. After we rushed through security I barely had any time to put on my belt when it came
time to board our United flight from San Francisco International Airport in California to JFK International Airport in New
York. The flight was the same as any other domestic flight: crowded with almost no leg room and uncomfortable seats.
Next
came the international flight to Munich Germany. We had about an hour of free time during the layover right after customs.
We all grabbed hot dogs and enjoyed our last "American" feast before the ride. When I finished mine I started subconsciously
breathing deeply as if to savoir the last of the American air. When I boarded the international flight even economy class
seemed luxurious and spacious compared to the domestic flights I have grown accustomed to. Each seat had so much leg space
and a personal entertainment system all complementary. I was eager to start this flight immediately, but to my dismay there
was a "brief" two hour flight delay which I gladly used to catch up on my much needed beauty sleep. I would seemingly
wake up periodically every thirty minutes exclaiming, "Did we take off yet?!?!" while the person sitting next to
me politely said, "NO!" As soon as the flight took off I was eager to figure out the entertainment system. By the
end of the flight I had watched every English movie: Jumper, Horton Hears a Whom, Spider wick Chronicles, and the Bucket List.
Finally we were in Munich and we enjoyed our five hour layover. I was exhausted and ready
to board our plane to Malta. Immediately, I fell asleep and remained so for the entire crowded 6 hour flight from Germany
to Malta. I tiredly walked to the baggage claim area with the rest of the group to claim our bags which we all had marked
with pink ribbons and a People to People tag.
We met our delegation manager, Ralu, outside of the airport and then we were assigned
groups for our home stay. I boarded a small red van with Alex, Johnnie, Matt, Nicole, Bianca, Jessica and my soon to be roommates
for the home stay: Josh, Ty, and Luke. The other student ambassadors and I watched hysterically as the driver was pulling
up to houses and shouting at other locals asking for directions and what sounded like Maltese swears. Already I could tell
it was going to be a long journey
