Date: Sunday 6/29/08                        Day:3 of my journey
Home Stay, Malta

Awesome! This word means worthy of awe or amazement. It is often used by the various surfers, "cali" girls, and teenagers of my state: California. It has also become hated by the many English teachers across the nation. This was definitely the perfect word to describe the perfect day.

We woke up bright and early at 6:30 AM (9:30 PM PST/12:30 AM EST) or at least we were supposed to. My roommate, Josh, turned off all three alarms we had set as soon as the rain leaving us the sunrise and mosquitoes to wake us up. Turns out we were woken up by the home stay mom, Sofia's, quiet and soft, "Hello?" At the time I was a light sleeper and the first one to wake up. I quickly jump out of bed saying, "We will meet you at the breakfast table" and woke up the rest of my roommates with a "gentle" shake and a "soft": WAKE UP!!! Immediately and almost simultaneously all my roommates woke up as if called by an elite army commander and sprung out of their cots. We all hurriedly got up to brush our teeth and got dressed. We were then called to breakfast where we had a breakfast we would soon get tired of: cereal with sugar and milk and toast with jam and butter. We then watched what seemed to be a Maltese version of American Idol before Josh noticed that we were about to miss our 8:15 Taxi. While I finished breakfast, the rest of them brought there backpacks to the front door and unfortunately resumed watching television. I had just picked up my back pack when the doorbell rang. It was the taxi driver. We then rushed out of the house saying good bye to our home stay family.

In the van, we all shared tales of our home stays and mosquito bites until we reached our destination of the harbor. All seemed well until I realized; my roommates and I forgot our lanyards! Hoping nobody would notice we snuck out of the van. We all purchased huge liter sized bottles of water fearing either dehydration or overpriced merchants. We all boarded the ferry with haste because every one knew today’s travel destination: Comino Beach and Blue Lagoon! We waited for about 30 minutes until the ferry raised anchor. Then we were off! The intercom announced many exciting facts about the many forts and churches along the coast. My friend and fellow ambassador quickly sprung out of the main cabin to take pictures of the beautiful Maltese Coast. Below are some pictures that I took.

Valletta (Maltese: Belt Valletta or Città Umillisima) is the capital city of Malta. The city has a population of 6,315 (official estimate for 2005). It is located in the central-eastern portion of the island of Malta, where Scebberras Hill juts out into the surrounding harbours.

Here is a different view of the coastline in Malta.

After about ten minutes of admiring the view, I started to feel sea sick and decided to head back in and take a seat. That was when I met some more friends all playing cards. There was Ramond, Matt, Joe, and Danny who were playing the worlds strangest game: push-up poker. They would play regular poker but instead of betting chips they would bet push-ups. By the end of the day each of them had done at least three hundred! Next there were Stephanie, Jessica, and Robert. They already knew each other from an Australia trip from two years before. Finally playing alongside them was John Floyd Greco Junior, my closest friend from the trip. We all joked around playing games like spoons, thirteen, and of course push-up poker.

Finally we were there! When we stepped outside the first thing we noticed was the water. It was as clear as crystal and had a similar hue to that of teal swimming pool water. We were all amazed that we could look down and see all of the ocean life at the sea floor. As soon of we finished our "delicious" lunch of cold pasta, old tuna, dry salad, and bread with frozen butter we rush straight out of the boat to get changed into our swim apparel. We then jumped into the cool water expecting it to be fresh, only to emerge trying to scrape of the salty taste. It still puzzles me how water so clear could be so salty. We swam to the opposite Island about one hundred-twenty meters away. We all sat on the rocky beach just enjoying each others company and the warmth of the sun. After we got tired of sitting around we all swam back. It was so hot that All it took to dry off completely was five minutes in the sun. We quickly climbed to the rendezvous point to retrieve our back packs. Quickly, we scurried to the ice-cream vendors to fetch some ice cream. It was delicious the Magnum brand ice cream was amazing. After enjoying my ice cream bar of chocolate, caramel deliciousness it was time to go. I quickly changed back into my normal clothes and got into our group. We quickly counted off as I struggled to remember that my number was thirty-three.

On the way back we took the direct route and I was completely lost in my thoughts. I watched the powerful wave’s crash into the shore and the boat. I stared out, head hanging over the rail, looking as if I was searching. I was lost in the view. What seemed to be only minutes turned out to be hours and suddenly the boat stopped? We had dropped anchor and there we were back at the harbor. We all quickly returned to our vans to return to the home stays. What an awesome end to an awesome day.
