Date: Friday 7/4/08                                                Day:8 of my journey
Cefalu, Italy

Unusual! By definition this word means noticeably different from what is generally found or experienced. Synonyms include curious, extraordinary, funny, odd, offbeat, peculiar, queer, and rare. Some might use this to describe a day that was an extremely new and insightful experience. Perfect! This was the perfect word for my unusual day.

Today was the Fourth of July and I was missing out on the fireworks. It wasn't a total disappointment though. Today was the day we would visit Sicilian children. I had lots of fun because we talked and played volleyball. All of the children spoke English and dressed very sporty. They some of them wore gym shorts and tank tops and some of them wore jeans and a t-shirt just like American kids. I specifically enjoyed it because I felt tall standing next to all of them !Smile I was relieved that they didn't play by the rules, because I didn't know them either. After about two hours straight of volleyball it was time to say goodbye and leave. On the bus we told stories about their amazing soccer talents, their vigorous games of volleyball, and their action packed basketball games.

Next stop was the Temple of Segesta. This was living proof that the Trojans were the Romans ancestors. According to the guide it was a temple built to show that the Trojans could build a huge shrine like the Greeks. It was either destroyed by Greek invader or incomplete. We then had free time or as I called it goof-off time. We all took pictures of each other and of the temple. We were planning to see the town of Erice but due to traffic it got canceled so we headed back to the hotel for dinner. What a wonderfully unusual end to an unusual day.
